Hamstring Injury
A hamstring tear refers to the partial or complete rupture of the muscles at the back of the thigh. This injury often occurs during activities that involve sudden acceleration, deceleration, or excessive stretching of the hamstring muscles. Symptoms may include sharp pain, swelling, and difficulty walking.
How To Help With Your Pain
-
- Rest and Immobilisation: Allow the injured hamstring to rest by avoiding activities that strain the muscle. Use crutches if needed to minimise weight-bearing on the affected leg.
- Range of Motion Exercises: As the initial pain subsides, incorporate gentle stretching and range of motion exercises to prevent stiffness. Sports Massage can be good for this too.
- Ice and Compression: Apply ice packs to the injured area for 15-20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling. Compression bandages can also help control swelling and provide support.
- Elevation: Elevate the leg whenever possible to further reduce swelling. Prop the leg up on pillows while lying down to promote fluid drainage away from the injured area.
- Strength & Length: Gradually reintroduce weight-bearing activities and strengthening exercises under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
